How to Improve Your Daytime Vision by Reducing Sunlight and Glare

I want to tell you about a product that has helped me a lot and, if you have a hard time with sunlight or glare, it might help you too.

If you’re wondering what glare is, it is something that happens when the intensity of light that we see is too much for our eyes to adjust to. We all need light to see, but when there is too much light, it can cause discomfort or make it hard to see. If you think about what happens when you’re driving directly into the sun and you cannot see at all because there is so much light shining directly into your eyes, it’s clear that too much glare can become dangerous for anyone.

We all experience glare to some extent, but certain things can make glare worse, including aging, having eye surgery, and some eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Vision is important for so many things that we do in our lives, so you definitely want to make sure to protect your vision by getting regular eye exams and wearing the best eyewear possible! If you think glare has become more of an issue for you than it was in the past, then it is even more important to get a professional eye exam.

In my case, I became much more sensitive to the sun and glare about a year and a half ago, when I was injured and ended up with a concussion. Once I was able to go outside again, I bought some sunglasses at a local pharmacy and they did help. But eventually my wife bought me a gift certificate to Ray-Ban. I went to the store and tried on just about every single pair they had. The ones that seemed to help me the most are the “Predator 2” frame with the “G-15” lenses. When I put them on, I could tell an immediate difference and my whole body relaxed. I really like these and I have found that I enjoy spending time outside again even on days that are really sunny. I don’t want you to have to spend time hiding inside from the sun either, which is why I wanted to tell you about these sunglasses!

I really like the Predator 2 frame because it wraps around my face really nicely and cuts out a lot of the excess light that could otherwise get in through the sides.

If you look at the Ray-Ban website, you’ll see that they offer two different types of lenses. I went with the “Green Classic G-15” lenses. They were originally designed for military use and absorb 85% of visible light. They also block most blue light, which makes for really nice color contrast and a more natural look to everything you see. I like them because they are very dark, which helps with my light sensitivity. However, they are not polarized. Ray-Ban also offers “Polarized Grey Mirror” lenses. These lenses have a mirror coating and are polarized. The mirror coating helps to reduce glare by reflecting it back towards the source and away from your eyes. Surprisingly, since the mirror coating reflects light instead of absorbing it, it also creates a brighter visual field when you’re wearing them compared to lenses that absorb light, like the G-15’s. The Grey Mirror lenses are also polarized, which means that they have a special coating that creates a filter. That filter blocks light coming towards your eyes at certain angles, but allows light in from other angles. Most of the light that we see comes towards our eyes at multiple angles because of the uneven surfaces of most objects. Rocks, trees, and other people are all examples of uneven surfaces. However, when there is a smooth, flat, and very reflective surface, like a body of water or a field of snow, more light comes towards our eyes at the same angle, so it is more concentrated and appears much brighter. Polarization specifically targets light from these types of sources and blocks it at the angles that we would usually see it, but it still lets in light from other angles. This allows us to experience less glare while still being able to see. According to Ray-Ban, the Polarized Grey Mirror lenses block 99% of reflected light.

Both lenses – the Green Classic G-15’s and the Polarized Grey Mirror lenses – are rated by Ray-Ban as category 3 lenses. This means that they are ideally suited for general use in most conditions, excluding only really extreme situations of bright light. This also means that they offer the most protection possible while still allowing a person to be able to see and they are safe for driving.

Another important factor to consider when shopping for sunglasses is whether the lenses offer UV protection, which is different from the factors we’ve talked about so far. UV protection shields your eyes from exposure to ultraviolet radiation which can be harmful to your eyes, even with just a little bit of exposure. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is important to always wear sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays and that screen out 75% to 90% of visible light. According to Ray-Ban, both of these lenses offer protection from 100% of UVA and UVB rays to 400nm.

I used to think Ray-Bans were just like any other sunglasses, except that they were a lot more expensive. However, I’ve learned that they actually do a really great job cutting glare and I think they are much better than the ones I used to use from the pharmacy.

These are what I have found works really well for me, but you may find that something different works for you. For example, another option is to use transition lenses, which adapt their level of tint based on the amount of UV light present in your environment. They can potentially be a good solution for people who need prescription lenses for both indoor and outdoor use and do not want to have to manage two different pairs of glasses. However, I have not tried transition lenses myself.

If you decide you want to give the Ray-Ban sunglasses a try to see if they will work for you, you can find a link by clicking here. If you need prescription sunglasses, you can also order these with a prescription by clicking where it says, “See prescription version.” The prescription ones offer even more choices in lenses, so you may want to consult with your eyewear provider to decide which ones will be best for you.
